Not Just One But Three Pincushions!

An amazing thing happened yesterday.

I finally got some pin cushions made!
If you are me, you definitely need chicken pin cushions.

The directions for this little guy are in the
"Late Summer Vol 1, Is 4" of BLOCK by MSQC.
(With a subscription, you also get the digital editions.)

Now, either their cutting directions are in error or I just
really struggled to understand their diagram.  If you
have the book and check it out, I'd love to know!
So, my first set of blocks was incorrect but I don't think
it's really noticeable when the chicken is put together.
After that, I just went with cutting out the log cabin
on my own.  I've made a few before!

*Note:  I would make the comb a little taller and a little shorter

One cushion can be made from 5 orphan charm pieces.
I love flannel but I don't like to sew with it much because
it really makes a mess in the machine so I decided this
was a great time to use a little half-pack of flannel by
Andover Fabrics that I had won several years ago.

And, just as I had hoped, when you fill it with crushed
English walnut shells (Amazon:  "Lizard Litter")
they sit well on the bars of the quilt frame.

There will likely be more of these made for gifts--
especially when I have a 5 qt bag of lizard litter
sitting around.  As I joked to my sister:
"...the things that I get stored up in my sewing room!"

Happy quilting!
Update:  I found free instructions to make
a similar pin cushion here.

I have 2 of those chicken pin cushions. Both were gifts. Enjoy yours.

I have a vintage pattern for these that came out years ago. Of course, it's just a tad different. They are so much fun and so cute!
