Hello again!
I didn't let 6 weeks slip by this time--just two!
(Look at that: making progress even there!)
We've been traveling again but this time? Vacation!
We drove down to San Antonio where we enjoyed the Riverwalk...
...saw the Alamo...
...and played two rounds of golf (Brackenridge & Olmos Basin).
The squirrels at Brackenridge are quite the thieves. The minute
you step out of your cart, they're in there grabbing your snacks.
I snatched my banana right out of his hands but as we drove
off, we noticed he'd already robbed somebody else.
Next, we met up with our son in Austin for a tour of
Still Austin Distillery. We've enjoyed a lot distillery tours
and this guy (can't remember his name) did a really great job.
He really knows his stuff, answered all questions in detail
and most importantly, you could tell he loves what he does.
(Not something you see often these days, eh?)
We ended with a tasting of course and left with a few bottles.
A little indoor mini-golf kept us up on our putting skills.
The 18th hole was quite the invention.
That wheel with the holes in it was turning, btw.
Waited in a long line for KG BBQ. Worth it!
We enjoyed a few renowned food trucks and other Texas
yumminess and did some general sightseeing.
All this time in the car gave me some great knitting time.
I'm still way behind on it but that's okay. It's progress!
We listened to, and finished, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.
Crime is NOT my thing but this covers the 1959 murder of
a family in Holcomb, KS (200 miles west of us) so we found it
pretty interesting, especially how they found the killers.
And how the killers both experienced such awful childhoods.
Enough sad stuff. Let's talk quilty stuff.
On our way out of Austin, I checked out Mesquite Bean Quilts.
Let's step inside and have a look around, eh?
I've seen this one a lot but look at the variation
in their classroom in the back:
Pumpkins!! Have I seen that one before? Hmm...
Maybe?
This would be a good way to use up a bit of my HST trimmings.
I came away with a few clearance goodies: fabric and a
Jo Morton pattern that looks like a lot of scrappy fun.
You'll be seeing that one show back up here later this year.
But first I have other quilts to get busy on!
Let's talk about them and my progress:
Weeks 19 & 20 Progress
In person the colors in this one just pop so I may
have to take another go at the pics before listing it.
It was quite cloudy/overcast.
Some fun polka dots on the back.
Swirling snowflakes.
I feel like maybe I've named another quilt this at some
point but there I was making the label and I still hadn't
come up with anything so I went with the first
thing that popped into my mind.
2) Quilting jobs
I stayed up until 2am to finish this king quilt.
I didn't get a finish pic of this but if you zoom you can
sorta see the butterflies and flowers design.
These two along with a third (quilted up months ago) were
sent back home with my sister who was in town visiting.
Huge relief moving those out.
2) Start next quilt
This quilt is for a dear friend who is fighting
a cancer that, to date, has no cure.
I've chosen "Star Chain" by Material Girl Quilts.
I'm using "Chickadee Landing" fabrics (KS Troubles), and because
I chose to use sizing (shrinks fabric), I'm also supplementing with
my KS Troubles scraps. No, it's not recommended to use sizing on
precuts but I have two layer cakes so even if I don't have enough
scraps on hand, (pretty positive I do), I'm still covered.
I want that nice crisp piecing.
The background will be Bella Solid "Ivory".
be my second go at this pattern.
3) Get caught up on the 2025 Unity QAL
Some progress made but still LOTS to go. Will I get caught
up by the time I visit Primitive Gatherings in July!?
I might have to set up my travel machine in front of
the tv and do some stitching at night...except we
really don't watch much tv these days.
5) Knitting:
I made decent progress on our trip to TX so I'm close
to finishing the first of three gifts.
5) Garden: Getting lots of lettuces and spinach and broccoli.
With all the rain everything is growing very well,
including the weeds!
6) Golf
Due to heavy rains, our tournament got rescheduled for July 4th.
I'm a little bummed because I've been playing well and
this even happened just a week before we were to compete:
After playing for just 3.5 years, I broke 80!
After the way I'd been struggling over the winter/early spring,
I wasn't sure it was ever going to happen. Now to do it again!
(Oh the addiction!)
(Oh the addiction!)
And to hold on to this kind of playing for the tourney.
Overall it's been a very productive two weeks.
My simple goal is just to keep on keepin' on, ya know?!
But the biggest focus is for sure that Star Chain quilt.
Shooting for a finished top next week!
Happy traveling, golfing, gardening, knitting and quilting!
