Hello again. Welcome to another check-in here at the
Morning Latte. This makes two weeks in a row. Maybe it'll
be sort of normal around here for at least a little while, eh?
Well, grab your coffee and let's see what I've been up to,
and where I've been up to this time!
After last week's post, did you guess correctly?
This will make for a lot of pics but I just really want
to share our first impressions as we flew in.
As always, the pics don't do it justice!
It was just stunning!
I love the Rockies but these are really even so much prettier.
(From what we saw, they don't have foothills like the Rockies.
It's just bam, mountains!)
It's been a few years since we flew over the Alps but we also
kinda felt these topped even those. Granted, we were caught
up in the moment, and we were descending (so closer).
After hitting the bottom SE corner of our country (Florida),
we flew right on up to the top NW corner a couple weeks later.
We spent a little time in Anchorage (can't really recommend it
but to be fair, it was just coming out of a long, hard winter).
Getting out in the countryside is definitely what you want to do!
In every direction, there is a gorgeous view of lakes, streams
and of course, all those mountains. Oh, and the waterfalls
coming down off the mountains everywhere.
We found the greatest little bungalow (airb&b) in Palmer
(where hubs was working the airshow) that we'd be happy
to recommend if anyone is heading up there!
We'd also recommend the town of Wasilla (not far from Palmer).
It's a little bigger just a few more restaurants and a nice golf course
but know that overall, it's a rugged, rural life up there!
Did I hike? Well I sure wanted to but it was still a bit early
(May and esp June is much more advisable) and while I don't
(May and esp June is much more advisable) and while I don't
mind the cold and rain, I didn't exactly want to be out by myself
with the moose-cows protecting their babies and the bears
coming out of hibernation and hungry.

Did I golf?
As it turned out, I had great weather for both rounds I played.
The courses were coming out of winter conditions but I play all
winter at home (weather-permitting) and this was expected.
Alaska isn't exactly a golf destination but the courses were
just fine for this time of year, and so worth all those views!
And what about quilt shops?
The LQS in Palmer was closed over the weekend but I was able
to squeeze in a very quick stop into Stitchin' Time on Monday
morning before hubs needed to be back in Anchorage.
I wasn't really looking to buy fabric but I enjoyed perusing,
even if there wasn't much in what I usually work with.
After seeing a lot of artwork around town (esp in restaurants)
and this bright cheery fabric, I realized that with such long,
white winters, the local tastes must tend toward
bright and cheery for sure!
nice spot for sewing together--something else I'm sure
is very needed in those long winters.
There was also a decent-sized collection of yarn but I had
plans to visit a knitting shop in Anchorage where I knew an
even bigger selection awaited and I'd have more time
to make good decisions.
and appropriate thing to do,at the Far North Yarn Shop,
I chose these in great hopes that they'll become socks.
In this lifetime.
Maybe even this decade yet.
Maybe even this decade yet.
For an extra push on my sock endeavors, I also picked this up.
Sure, there's plenty of info on the internet but I really like the
info in this book and how its organized. I'm not quite a beginner
but it's been a long time and it might be just what I need
to help me finally get going on them again.
(...said every knitter when buying any book or supplies!)
So I guess the big question is, what progress have I made?
For starters, I finished a dishcloth for the new kitchen and
started on a second. (Planning on making at least six.)
I prefer to listen to books while knitting on flights but I thought
it'd be nice if I joined hubs in watching whatever movies he chose.
Well, all three movies were so good that I barely knitted at all.
Nuremberg (Russell Crowe)
Solo Mia (Kevin James)
Song Song Blue (Hugh Jackman/Kate Hudson)
I have to admit that on long flights, it's a great way to pass
the time. (I canNOT sleep on planes. Ever. It's a real issue!)
Well, that's it for this week. No more travel for me until
next month so it's time to start setting weekly goals again:
Goal for Week 20
Finish sewing the last of Unity QAL HSTs into units; there are
a LOT left but I think I need to start making up for lost time!
The beautiful frozen waters near Prince William Sound, AK
Happy quilting!
